Great Movie – Persian Lessons
I’m not sure whether it’s legal or illegal, but I finally managed to watch *Persian Lessons* online. The story follows a Jewish man who outsmarts a German captain and survives by teaching him a completely invented version of Farsi.
I’m usually not interested in war-related movies. War is created by greedy, evil people, and films about genocide evoke only one feeling — sadness. Yet somehow, movies like *Life Is Beautiful* and *Persian Lessons* captivate me. Both directors turn something horrifying into something hopeful. I remember laughing through the first half hour of *Life Is Beautiful*, right before the Germans captured the Jewish family. The entire story shifts your emotions from joy to sadness and anger. It has always been one of my favorite films.
The actors in *Persian Lessons* are incredible too. They had to learn a completely fabricated language from scratch — even if it was only a collection of invented words. I once learned German and Italian, but I’ve forgotten almost everything. Still, both movies beautifully show that “when there is a will, there is a way.”
On the other hand, killing without reason makes me furious. Even imprisoning someone simply for saying something another person dislikes is madness.
Mete watched the movie as well, but he didn’t enjoy it. Not because it’s about genocide, but because the idea of learning a language without grammar doesn’t make sense to him. He said you can’t just put random words together to form sentences — there must be grammar and tenses. In my opinion, he focused on the wrong aspect of the film.
